Forsyth Community Makes Book Sale a Success

FCPL Friends & Advocates hosted its first Book Sale of the year at the Cumming branch of the Library last weekend and raised nearly $7,000 for upcoming programs at the Library.

“We are grateful to the community for continuing to donate such wonderful inventory,” said Paula Glover a volunteer and Publicity Coordinator for the Friends & Advocates.  “We’re also very appreciative of our volunteers that work so hard to collect donations throughout the year and organize the sale, as well as the patrons that come to shop year after year.”

Four Junior Girl Scouts and two Brownies came from the Central Forsyth Service Unit at Mashburn Elementary to Thursday’s book sorting party to deliver about 600 books they collected in a book drive at Mashburn Elementary. Their book drive was the culmination of the troop’s Bronze Award Service Project, the highest award a Junior Girl Scout can earn.

The troop, led by Erin Collins and Traci McKinley, identified a need in the community, created an action plan to fill that need and then executed the plan. Working through Hands on Forsyth to connect with the FCPL Friends & Advocates, the Girl Scouts first drafted bulletins for school and neighborhood newsletters. The troop worked with school leaders to place donation boxes in schools. “The girls had a great time meeting the FCPL Friends & Advocates volunteers and interacting with positive role models,” said Collins.

Students, staff and alumni from the TeamMBA program at North Georgia College and State University also participated in the Book Sale on Saturday. Kristin Joyner organized the group and they spent the day assisting patrons with purchases and keeping the books organized for easier shopping. “Since the TeamMBA program is based in Forsyth County, we strive to give back to this community. Participating in the Book Sale helps fund educational programs for children and adults at the Library, so it’s a good fit for us,” says Joyner.

The FCPL Friends & Advocates will use the funds raised at the Book Sale to support upcoming programming at the Library, such as the FCPL Family Cinema, Tween/Teen Book Groups and Movies, and Adult Book Discussions. The next Book Sale will be held at the Hampton Park Library in July.
