July/August 2019 – Summer Wrap up

Snap! – And just like that –   Summer is over and school is starting.  10 weeks went by in a flash.  The Library System broke attendance records for their Summer Reading Program (sponsored by the FCPL FRIENDS) again this year.  The FCPL Friends bookstores were incredibly busy too, with some stores having their best financial months ever!

I just personally want to take this moment to express my gratitude.

Thank you for taking your children/grandchildren to the library to enjoy one of the FREE programs and allowing them to come in the bookstore and select a book to keep for themselves.  The bookstore volunteers, who are mostly seniors, thoroughly enjoyed meeting the families and watching the children count their money to pay for their books.  It’s a win for everyone.  The Seniors feel connected in the community, the kids can purchase a super cheap book, and the library receives funding to offer more family programs. I encourage you to continue to donate your books to the library, shop the bookstores, and consider being a volunteer.  The bookstores generated nearly $55,000 for the System this year!!

Let me also take a moment to praise the FRIENDS volunteers for their laborious efforts .  Many have put in an enormous amount of time sorting, shelving and packing boxes these past couple of months.  The donations were immense this Summer and the activity was above normal in the stores and behind the scenes.  This operation is TOTALLY manual and completely volunteer run.  I especially want to highlight the store managers – Abbey Harkrider, Kelly Esbeck, Jane Watson, Sharon Jones, and Stephanie Petters for their enthusiasm and dedication.

I have found that books connect people.  Bookstores are alive today because people want to talk about books with each other.  Books also have a way of finding you.  How often have you happened upon a book and it hit home, at a particular moment in your life.  They can help you understand yourself and the world a little better.  They can comfort, calm, and challenge us.

As we move into the school year, please share with your educator friends that the bookstores have study guides, test prep materials, “Classic Books,” and resources materials for a bargain price.  We hope everyone has a great school year and we look forward to you visiting with us and finding your next book,

Jodie Barger
